Why Build A Company Website?

The Challenge

For many small businesses the challenges with starting up are often so overwhelming that the building a website is a step too far and an additional cost they can do without. With options to build social media options through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram there is a great temptation to forego a company website and save the expense and stress.

According to online accounting software company Xero “Lack of courage and lack of direction” are often many obstacles to getting a website up and running. As Xero go on to say “Hiring someone else to do it for you can be extremely beneficial. Keeping the website up to date yourself is often surprisingly easy and straightforward.”

Finding a web design company doesn’t have to be that hard if you follow a few basic steps:

  1. Find someone local – whatever you imagine you will save in employing a company based in China or India, building a face to face relationship with your web designer is worth a fortune in terms of how they understand what you are trying to achieve and getting them to invest their time in making your business a success through their work.
  2. Check the work history – Talk to people that have worked with your web designer before – portfolios are good to see, but positive feedback from an old client will tell you much more about what you can expect if you work with them.
  3. Scope out the work – Get a clear and well described scope of what you can expect to receive, what you need to provide and milestones of when these things need to happen to keep progress moving forward.
  4. Content Management System (CMS) – By specifying that your website be built on a platform that allows you to edit the content easily, to update content and add new information you can keep your website relevant and useful moving forward and keeps costs for future updates to your website very low and typically free. Platforms like WordPress, Drupal or Joomla are Open Source and used by millions of websites with applications for smartphones that allow site content creation and management as easily as drafting an email.
